What to Expect When You Visit
Sometimes visiting a new place can be intimidating, especially when it seems
like everyone else is well acquainted with each other and the surroundings. To
take a little mystery out of what you can expect to encounter when you visit
Central the first time, here's a description of a typical Sunday worship.
Nearly half of our membership are children under 18 years old, with
most in primary grades. Children of all ages, including, infants and toddlers,
are welcome to stay with us throughout our worship time. If, however, your child
requires a diaper change, or a change of scenery, we have a staffed nursery
every Sunday morning.
Our worship period will last about an hour. It will include singing,
praying, a time of teaching, and the sharing of Communion. Everyone can
participate. The words to nearly all of our songs will be broadcast to a large
screen hanging in the sanctuary. When Communion is taken, each person
will remain in their seat. A plate of bread will be passed first, reminding us
of Jesus body. Then, a tray filled with juice cups will follow, representing
Jesus' blood sacrifice for our sins. You may eat the bread and drink the juice
as it is passed to you (and place your juice cup back in the tray before passing
it to the person sitting next to you).
Each Sunday we take up a collection that helps support the work of our
church. Our members will give as they are able. Guests are welcome to give as
well, but should feel no obligation to participate.
At the end of our service, we will offer an invitation for members and
visitors to let the rest of the congregation know of specific cares and concerns
we can pray for. Often, this is a time when people let us know of their desire
to commit their lives to God. Other times, people may ask for the prayers and
support of the church to get through a tough time in their life. If you wish to
let us know of a need that you have, please walk down to the front row and
you'll be greeted with a listening ear.
We hope that visitors notice our banners that hang in the sanctuary. The
words love, live, and lead represent the concepts of Central's mission
statement - To truly love God by following Jesus and helping all people to
become like Him.
Our desire is that our lives demonstrate our love for God, that our actions
model the teachings of Jesus, and that we each spread the message of His love by
leading others to a deeper relationship with Him.
Churches of Christ are autonomous from each other (organized only by local
leaders and members) but quite similar in many respects. As you visit Churches
of Christ around the world, you'll find that most will include singing, praying,
teaching, weekly Communion, offerings and the like on a typical Sunday morning.
We hope you'll find that our time together brings you closer to God and ready to
tackle the week ahead.
